Planned Initiatives from the Department of Health and Human Services Give attention to Maternal Mental Health

Some excellent news from our colleagues on the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA)…

The USA Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning to launch significant initiatives addressing the maternal mental health crisis.

These latest initiatives announced on Wednesday, September twenty seventh, include:

Initiative #1: $8 Million in grants for 12 state-based maternal mental health programs.

Initiative #2: A brand new task force to create a national strategy to handle maternal mental health.

Initiative #3:  A national public education campaign, Talking Postpartum Depression, that may provide details about this condition and can combat stigma.

These efforts support the White House Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis, a whole-of-government technique to combat maternal mortality and improve maternal and infant health, particularly in underserved communities.

Additional funding will probably be used to:

  • Expand and diversify the perinatal workforce
  • Increase access to maternal health services
  • Support parents and families
  • Put money into maternal health research

These initiatives have been supported by MMHLA and their partners including the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health (formerly 2020 Mom), MomCongress, Postpartum Support International, the Shades of Blue Project, March of Dimes, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In case you are eager about participating in efforts to advertise the mental health of moms and childbearing people in the US by specializing in national policy and health equity, learn more concerning the MMHLA HERE.
